Don’t Wait for the First Cold Morning: Why August Is the Time to Plan Your Wood Burner Installation

It’s mid-August. The evenings are still light, the garden is still being used and, for most of us, lighting the wood burner is probably one of the last things on our minds.

But here at Southwest Woodburners, we’re already thinking about autumn.

Because after years in the stove industry, we know what happens next.

September arrives. The children go back to school. The mornings suddenly feel a little cooler. The evenings begin drawing in. And then comes that first genuinely chilly evening when people across Dorset start thinking exactly the same thing:

“We really should get that wood burner sorted.”

And that is when the rush begins.

Planning a wood burner installation in Dorset? Beat the autumn rush. Visit Southwest Woodburners, explore our stove range and book your 2026 installation early - Charnwood C-Four Woodurning stove in Painted Brick Fireplace.

We’re Preparing Earlier This Year – And There’s a Reason

Last August, we wrote about visiting Charnwood on the Isle of Wight and seeing their warehouse filling with stoves ready for the autumn and winter season.

This year, we're taking that same thinking into our own showroom.

Throughout the summer we've been preparing for what we know will be another busy autumn and winter at Southwest Woodburners. We’re bringing stock stoves in earlier, making sure we have a good selection of appliances available and doing everything we can now to be better prepared when demand increases.

Because once the colder weather arrives, things can change remarkably quickly.

It isn't only installation dates that become busier. Manufacturers and distributors see demand increase, particular stove models can become harder to source quickly and everyone involved in getting a stove from showroom to finished installation suddenly has a much fuller diary.

So our advice for 2026 is very simple:

If you're hoping to have a wood burner installed ready for autumn or winter, start the conversation now.

August Doesn't Feel Like Stove-Buying Weather – That's Exactly the Point

Buying a wood burner when it's 20 degrees outside can feel slightly strange.

But actually, this is one of the best times to do it.

You have time to visit the showroom without feeling rushed, look properly at different models and styles, talk through the installation and understand exactly what is going to work in your home.

There's also time to consider the details.

Do you want something traditional or contemporary? Wood burning or multifuel? Do you have an existing chimney or will you need a twin-wall flue system? Will building work be required? Does the hearth need changing?

A good stove installation isn't simply about choosing a stove from a photograph.

We want to make sure the appliance suits the room, the property, the chimney or flue arrangement and – importantly – the way you're actually going to use it.

Starting early gives us the opportunity to do that properly.

Stocking Up Before the Rush

One of the lessons we've learned over the years is that preparation makes an enormous difference.

That's why we're already increasing our stove stock ahead of the 2026/27 heating season.

Our Dorset showroom now has an excellent selection of British and Scandinavian stoves, including models from Charnwood, Clock, HWAM, WIKING and Stûv, giving you the opportunity to see and compare very different styles of stove before making your decision.

We're also bringing additional stock into the business now.

It doesn't mean every stove will always be sitting on the shelf – there are simply too many models, sizes and variations for that – but it does mean we're doing everything we can to make the journey from choosing your stove to installing it as straightforward as possible.

What Happens When the Weather Changes?

Every year we see the same pattern.

The first colder spell arrives and enquiries increase almost overnight.

People who have been considering a wood burner throughout spring and summer suddenly decide they're ready to go ahead. Installation diaries begin filling. Stove orders increase. Chimney sweeps become busier. And customers naturally start asking:

“Can we have it fitted before Christmas?”

Sometimes the answer is yes.

But the later into autumn we get, the harder it becomes to guarantee particular dates.

If having your stove installed for autumn, before Christmas or simply before the coldest part of winter is important to you, booking early gives you far more choice.

A Few Things Worth Sorting Now

If you're planning to use an existing chimney, arrange to have it swept before the heating season gets underway. Local chimney sweeps become extremely busy once autumn arrives, so this is another job worth booking sooner rather than later.

Think about your fuel too. Good-quality, dry firewood makes an enormous difference to how well your stove performs. Getting your log store organised and sourcing suitable fuel now means you're ready when the first fire is lit.

And if you already own a stove, now is a good opportunity to check door ropes, firebricks, glass and other consumable components rather than discovering something needs attention on the first cold Sunday evening of the year.

Thinking About Replacing an Older Stove?

This is also a good time to consider whether your existing appliance is still right for your home.

Modern EcoDesign stoves have come a long way in terms of efficiency, combustion and controllability. If you have an older stove that is difficult to control, uses a lot of fuel or simply no longer suits the room, come and talk to us.

Replacing an existing appliance can sometimes be more straightforward than people expect, although every installation needs to be assessed individually.

Come and See Them Burning

One of the advantages of visiting our showroom is that you don't just have to imagine what a stove will be like from a brochure.

We have live appliances in the showroom, allowing you to see a stove burning, understand how the controls work and get a much better feel for the differences between models.

And we're continuing to improve the showroom and our displays ahead of the coming season.

We want choosing a wood burner to be enjoyable – not something you're trying to organise in a panic because the temperature has suddenly dropped.

Autumn Will Be Here Before We Know It

We know we're saying this while Dorset is still very much in summer mode.

But give it a few weeks.

The evenings will shorten. There'll be that first unmistakable chill in the morning air. Jumpers will appear again. And before long we'll be lighting the showroom stoves each morning.

Our job is to be ready before that happens.

We're getting the stock in. We're preparing the showroom. We're organising the diary.

If a new wood burner is part of your plans for autumn or winter 2026, we'd encourage you to do the same.

Don't wait for the first cold morning.

Come and have a chat with us now, explore the different options and get your installation underway while there's still time to plan everything properly.
